The Rüsselsheim car manufacturer Opel has to temporarily close its Eisenach plant completely due to the lack of chips. First of all, the plant will be closed from next week until the end of the year, week reported the automobile. There is not yet a specific date for restarting production.
According to an Opel spokesman, “at the beginning of 2022, production of the Opel Grandland will also start again in the hybrid version in Eisenach, provided the supply chain situation allows”. Short-time working is planned for employees. Part of the production will be temporarily outsourced to the Sochaux plant in France. As part of the French PSA group, Opel is now part of the Stellantis group.
In Eisenach, Opelproducing has been the SUV Grandland X as a combustion engine and as a plug-in hybrid since 2019. 1,300 people are currently employed there. The semiconductor shortage affecting has been since the end of last year production in the auto industry. The industry expects the problems to persist well into the coming year.
