Android 12 is here

After several beta versions, Google has officially launched Android 12. The Pixel smartphones will be the first to be supplied in the coming weeks.

Google’s new Android version 12 is official: Google presented the software in a blog post and announced that the source code will be pushed into AOSP. According to the company, the first devices should receive the upgrade in the coming weeks, especially the Pixel smartphones. Other manufacturers such as Oneplus, Oppo, Realme, Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi will then follow.

Android 12 has been available as a beta version since summer 2022. There is no longer a great difference between the last version and the one now published; Developers could already rely on the so-called platform stability in the last beta and adapt their apps.

Android 12 mainly offers innovations in the optical area as well as in some data protection settings. With Material You, Google is bringing a new design for its operating system for the first time since the introduction of Material Design.

Material You offers numerous setting options

Material You allows users to adapt the user interface to their taste much more than before. Not only can the colors be selected individually, but also the shapes of the icons and the fonts. In addition, the transition animations have been redesigned, which is why the new Android looks smoother. There are also new widgets, for example for chats.

With the Privacy Dashboard, Android 12 users will in the future have a central point of contact for all information and settings relating to data protection. There you can see which applications are using the microphone, the camera and the location services and also limit the corresponding options.

The location services can be set so that an app is only given the approximate location – which is sufficient for weather apps, for example. If the camera or microphone is used by the smartphone or tablet, users will in the future be shown a colored point in the status bar. The camera and microphone can also be deactivated directly using buttons.
